Tiny Bugs… what are they?!

Ew What is it!? A plague? I went out to check on my chickens yesterday afternoon.

It is my sons job to take care of them but I like to go out every once in a while just to check up on things and make sure all the girls are happy. (Who cares about that noisy ol rooster.)

Anyway, on the way out to the coop area I noticed an area where my girls like to dirt bath. It is full of these little tiny bugs. At first I stressed out… “oh no! is it fleas or mites or something?” I’ve never seen anything like it.
On further investigation… the whole area is infested with these tiny little critters. Ew, gross! Thank goodness they are not right in the yard right by the house or worse yet in the garden eating everything. Yet…. yikes, what if they grow and grow and grow!

The video shows the area where they are crawling. They go down the hill around the chicken yard and over to my back yard. It is really a big area with millions of these tiny creatures.

They are the size of gnats but they are just milling around not flying. They are so small I can’t tell if they have wings. I needed my glasses.

I don’t believe it has anything to do with the chickens after all so that is good… but what on earth are they? they almost look like aphids… but not quite.

Anyone have any ideas to what these might be? Will they grow and become a plague that will eat my garden!   Argh. I hope not.

Edit to add: The next day…. they are gone! A few still hanging around but only a few. Weird.

  1. I think they may be grain weevils. They may have recently hatched. If they were gone the next day the chickens may have had a yummy treat. Here is a link to a website about them. http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2011/01/18/grain-weevil-6/

  2. I don’t know but I have them. They came in on the pigeon feed. I want to know what they are too.

I live in coastal bend area of south Texas. This past spring I saw the same thing, or some thing similar, in my back yard. Just gazillions of them all over the ground. They didn’t appear to damage anything. As with your incident, one day they were there, the next day they were not in sight. I thought it Interesting that my neighbor also had chickens up until January of this year. Makes one wonder about those chickens…
